Western Australia Faces Electricity Crisis Amid Rapid Price Increases

Western Australia is facing a potential electricity crisis as energy prices for large business customers continue to surge — with some seeing increases of 50% or more. The steep price rises are hitting “contestable” customers (those using more than 50 MWh per year) who are not eligible for government subsidies available to households and small businesses.

These rising costs come as the State Government moves toward closing its remaining coal-fired power stations by 2029, raising questions about supply reliability and long-term pricing stability. Many affected businesses are now exploring solar and battery storage solutions to reduce exposure to the volatile wholesale market.

Industry experts point to higher fuel prices, network investment, and financing costs as key drivers behind the increases, with further volatility expected as the state transitions to renewable energy sources.
