WA Government Secures Major Renewable Energy Agreements

WA Government Secures Major Renewable Energy Agreements

The Western Australian Government has announced a series of new agreements to accelerate the State’s transition to renewable energy, marking a significant step toward replacing coal-fired generation.

Under the agreements, government-owned utilities including Synergy and the Water Corporation will purchase electricity from several large-scale wind farm projects currently under development across regional WA. These projects are expected to deliver more than 1 gigawatt of new renewable generation capacity, enough to power over 800,000 homes annually.

Key projects include major onshore wind developments scheduled to come online from 2027 through to 2029, supported by long-term power purchase agreements. These commitments are designed to unlock investment in new renewable infrastructure while providing greater certainty for developers.

Importantly, the combined output from these projects is expected to exceed the capacity of the State’s remaining coal-fired power stations, supporting WA’s plan to phase out state-owned coal generation by 2030.

The announcement builds on existing renewable investments, including battery storage projects and previous wind farm agreements, and forms part of a broader strategy to deliver a more reliable, affordable, and lower-emissions energy system.
